We’re recalling the legend of three witch-sisters who were burned in Landsberg, a German town that now lies within Polish borders and is known as Gorzów Wielkopolski. We crossed the western border to buy a magical chemical powder—drawing on the Polish belief in the special power of German cleaning products—with which we performed a ritual in an old Polish washing machine affectionately called Frania. The ritual commemorated the sisters and honored the fluid identity of this peculiar borderland.
